Johannes Radebe is today’s Black History Month LGBT+ hero, nominated by Pride-goer Ruth Howett who tells us: Johannes grew up in South Africa where his mother encouraged him to pursue his love of ballroom dancing despite the homophobic bullying he received. He joined the Strictly Come Dancing professionals in 2018. Ruth says “Johannes is a wonderful dancer and has such a funny and positive manner about him. He is a joy to watch and listen to. I especially loved his same-sex dance with fellow professional Graziano Di Prima”. Viewers said they were moved to tears when the series made history with this first individual same sex dance, however the BBC also received 200 complaints.
