We did a survey last year to find out what people wanted from Norwich Pride. Over 200 of you filled it in. Here are your personal messages to the Norwich Pride Collective...

 "We, collectively, are awesome"
"Well done for planning an event like this, and long may we have a sustained annual event as Norwich Pride!"
"All the very best, hope it's a great success"
"Make it a fun event, accessible to everyone"
 "Great idea, thanks"
"Make it fun and be as inclusive as possible"
"Having been to York Lesbian Arts Festival for the past 4 years, what I would most like is a similar event/celebration, ie a gathering based around inspiring lesbian writers, poets, performers...local and international...for example it would be great to have Jackie Kay reading again.  (She has been to the arts centre a couple of years ago, as you probably know!).  Clair Summerskill doing her standup/singing, also been here in past.  New writers who have been recently published, like Maria North, as well as Stella Duffy, Val McDermid and Manda Scott...and films form Lesbian and Gay film festival...an event to celebrate our diversity and creativilty mainly would be great.
"Fabulous!  And about time!  I am a hetero sexual female but I feel that something like this is crucial to the full integration of all sexualities within society.  I cant wait to wave my rainbow flag in the summer - (where can I get one?)
"Thanks in advance for all your hard work!  It's great to be consulted.  To my mind its important that there's a 'political' dimension (but definalty non-political) and that we remember/show solidarity with people in other countries who are persecuted for their sexuality (someone speaking from personal experience perhaps?) - also vitally important is the issue of homophobia in schools (Schools Out maybe), the recent figures on young lesbians mental health that stonewall published etc etc.  And please keep the whole event as non-commercial as possible.
"Remember our history, our pride and our future but above all enjoy"
"Think Big!  Try to get as much support from International Organisations as well who have already run Pride or Mardi Gras Celebrations; help with seeking funding, what went wrong/right etc.  A Global approach could link to the big venues around the world.  Make it as inclusive of the General local population as possible - political activity is great in the right place but can alienate the very support we seek.  We need to be subtle so everyone can enjoy the celebrations!  Check out the 'Party in the Park' held in Sydney - drag shows and dog shows etc.
" Well done, Norwich Pride has been a long time coming, and events of this kind supports the ethos of demonstrating that Norfolk is visably diverse"
 "Make it fun and colourful"
"If you pull it off, I'll attend!"

" I would like to see arranged a Gay Ball, so we can dress up in our best.  I'm not talking about people in jeans and T shirt (like I've seen for other Gay Balls in some other places), no no no.  They can do that ANYWHERE.  Strictly Tuxedo's and Ties, ball gowns, that kind of thing.  Some friends and I were thinking of arranging this anyway, so if you want us to coincide with the pride event, let me know"

"The reason I like the Pride in Birmingham was that they managed to combine the social side of the event (like the drag comedy shows in open-air venues and the after-march parties in local gay clubs) with a very visible political message during the March and in the main area with literature stalls etc.  I want to have fun at Pride but I dont want to forget that we started it because we didnt want to be ignored, legislated against and hidden away as some kind of dirty secret"
 "To have fun!"
"To bring everybody together and make lots of new friends"
 "Its about Time !!!"
 "About time!"
 "Make it good"
 "Do it!"
 "Lots of Drink and Partying"
"Norwich Pride 2009 would raise the profile and awareness of gay issues in Norwich.  It is essential as a city for Norwich to have a Pride"
" A definate MUST DO! would be immense"
"Go for it!Gay Pride all the way!!  Norwich should be proud!!"
"I think this is a great idea and just what the gay community in Norwich need.  It would be great to get a variety of local venues and businesses involved and for the community to be able to be seen and feel better accepted by the rest of Norwich"
"About time a major city of the country had a pride event"
 "The bigger the better!"
"Its a great idea - well done!"
 "Have it large!!!"
 "Live long and enjoy"
 "GOOD LUCK, JUST DO IT!"
 "Be yourself"

 "THANK-YOU"
"AM FOR SOMTHING ALONG THE LINES OF MANCHESTER PRIDE - LOCAL, FUN AND MINIMUM ON POLITICS"
 "Lets go for it"
 "DO IT BITCH!!"
"If charging, keep it reasonable so it is accessible to all"
" I feel that there is a fine balance to be held.  All I want is to be treated as an equal human being.  I dont need to flaunt my sexuality or tell people they must accept it.  I want to be seen as the person I am first who just so happens to be in a life time loveing relationship with another woman. An event that celebrates anyone's 'differences' is preferable.  I have attended the Brighton Pride (not the march) for the social side and how it welcomed anyone and everyone.  Good luck with the day and we shall certainly be in the City to support the Pride"
 "Good Luck"
"Norwich as we all know is a little way behind in cultural awareness and attitudes.  Belief systems of the population can be difficult to change.  But given the dynamic and enthousiastic creative talents of the planning Collective, I am sure that the approach and end products on the day will certainly make a noticable difference and go a long way to raising the profile of the need for everyone to be accepted within the wider community no matter what!  Good Luck and I look forward to joining you on the day"
"I think events need to be inclusive with an emphasis on fun.  Brighton Pride also starts on the 25th July - do you not think this will affect attendance? (Probably not)."
"I THINK ITS IMPORTANT TO MAKE IT 'PERSONAL' TO NORWICH (AND NORFOLK) LIFE AND COMMUNITY - AND IDENTITY TO LGBT FOLK AND STRAIGHT ALIKE.  LOCAL CULTURE BUT WITH INTELLIGENCE"
 " BE HAPPY BEING YOURSELF"
 "Have a great day everyone"
"Make sure you have fun too!"
"Get the radio involved.  Radio Norwich and Future Radio"
 "Have a good event"
"I think the first March/Pride should show that we are equal to everyone and not how much skin can be shown. ie a family style."
"Try not to let differences in personalities get in the way of what could be a wonderful event in Norwich"
"TO MAKE IT A FUN DAY AND AN ENJOYABLE EVENT - OPEN FOR EVERYONE TO JOIN IN"
"Start small but dont give up"
"TO PUT GAYS ON THE MAP IN NORWICH"
"IT SHOULD BE ABOUT LGBT PEOPLE NOT JUST YOUNG LADS IN T-SHIRTS! HAVE MENTAL HEALTH TIE BECAUSE OF STRAINS OF, COMING OUT, BEING GAY ETC"
" We live work and play here, We are as much part of Norwich community as everyone else and we are not going away. :-)"
"WHAT IS NORMAL at the end of the day"
"Great to have one in the East Anglia area"
"Would be nice to have a real party and and advertise for all gay people to unite - Kindness, Harmony and Support essential"
"Political less in face, but informative, bringing people together.  all the gay, L,B Groups.  Comedy, sex education, straight people involved, making gayness OK, as it is!"
"Norwich has such a limited gay scene compared to other cities of a similar size, and I think this should change.  Since moving to Norwich at times I have felt totally isolated.  It would be fantastic to have a big, public pride event - other events I've been to have really bought the community together, and its a great way to publicise local gay venues and events that people might not have heard of/been to before.  I really hope that Norwich Pride is a success, and I think it's a huge step forward for the queer comunity here.  The louder, prouder, and more public the better!"
"As much colour and glitter as possible please"
 "Bring it on!!"
"I think it is really important for the evet to be fun, entertaining and welcoming"
"Have fun and make it fun!  Thanks for doing it"

"Please put one on with events that are relevant to our social network in Norwich"
"GO FOR IT AND ADVERTISE LARGE!!!"
"Be fun- keep politics away as much as possible"
 "Good Luck"
 "Go gay and be proud"
"About time something was done, Should make a change of something different to do for the day"
 "Do something good"
 "DO IT!"
"Why would you want to make the 'gays' public it will only create more abuse than there already is, gay pride makes the gays seem like a minority group!"

 "Take out politics"
"Make it happen and make it count!!!!"

 "KEEP IT SIMPLE"
"THE NUMBER OF EVENTS NEEDS TO BE KEPT LOW SO THAT THEY ARE ALL WELL ATTENDED"
 "Thanks for taking the initiative"
"The march doesnt have to be through streets, although that would be nice.  I think the symbolism of us all walking somewhere is BIG and that could be around a park or a field if it has to be.  Is it possible to pull in key Norfolk gay figures or people who have linked themselves to Norfolk in any way? Stephen Fry jumps to mind.......Good Luck!"
"As the first Pride for Norwich we need to be visable and approachable.  A march is essential but not too flamboyant (Norwich needs to be eased in fairly gently)."

"First, good luck - it takes an awful lot of work and guts to organise and you're all stars...My long experience is that such events are dominated by gay men.  Not only their fault!  Often the women organisers do not ignore 'politically correct' for having FUN but the gay men do.  Pride these days (and I spent many years on the frontline of political activism when it was essential) should be celebrating more than political.  We should be light - following the Australian, Brasilian, Cape Townian etc models.  Many people, especially lesbians have not found Britsh Prides relevant to them.  We MUST be sensitive to that.  Equally important is that Prides should not become commercialised (as has happened in London and thousands of us now stay away deliberatly or find it far too male, too expensive and cliche-driven).  Your questionnaire itself is dominated by 'gay' but 'gay' refers to men - have you ever heard a gay man describe himself as a 'lesbian'???

t;Ask Cinema City to have a lesbian and gay film festival at the same time, and choose entertaining films and not just heavy politics...

See if the Castle would have a central exhibition of lesbian and gay artworks - painting, sculpture, photography, glass, i.e. all of the visual arts

See if Waterstones or another would have a window display of lesbian and gay literature

"THANK YOU! ROCK ON YOU HAVE MY SUPPORT IN SPIRIT, IF NOT IN PERSON!"
"Its about time Norwich had a Pride event, thanks for organizing one.  A mixture of different types of events on the day would be excellent"
"My partner and I attend Brighton Pride every year, the thing that makes it so successful is that it has a 'come one come all' atmosphere, no one is made to feel that they dont belong.  Celebrating diversity more than anything is the key.  If Norwich Pride is to be successful there can be no half measures it has to be an all or nothing affair you only get one chance to make an impression - businesses need to be reminded of the value of supporting the pink pound!! Good Luck!!"
"Remember that not everyo ne shares your views.  They have as much right to their veiwpoint as you do to yours.  Try to be inclusive not exclusive as the name and activity choices already imply"
"The LGBT community would benefit greatly from their own Pride.  Good Luck!"
"Good Luck with all your plans. Put Norwich well and truly on the map!"
